Gilly McCadden
Gilly McCadden’s abstract watercolours explore the evocative nature of colour, line and space and it’s ability to conjure a sense of place or an emotional response. She uses a myriad of application techniques to give a much-neglected medium a new lease of life. The work has a simple, contemporary feel, but the simplicity is deceptive; these are works of depth and subtlety that repay long contemplation. Blocks and shapes unfold in perspective; lines and edges stand out sharply or bleed gently into the background, providing just enough detail for the viewer to complete the scene. As in the real world, where a change in the light or weather can transform a scene, so here the boundaries between solid and liquid, air and land are not fixed, but shift and alter, blur and blend.
Gilly’s love affair with watercolours began when, after leaving art college, she worked for many years as a colourist for a London Fine Art publisher, acquiring an in-depth knowledge of colour theory and a valuable understanding of colour relationships. She also encountered the use of transparent inks in the printing process and it was this that led to her to explore watercolour.
Gilly McCadden studied Fine Art at Brighton College of Art and paints from her studio in West Sussex. She has been widely exhibited at art fairs and galleries throughout the UK.
